Dancefloor Rules: Thou Shall Not Spit, Rob or Throw Objects at the DJ
There seems to be a new epidemic of people robbing/ injuring DJs, which is never okay. The recent victims of this ASBO behaviour include Duke Dumont who was spat on and had bottles thrown at him when he played in Union Hall in Edmonton, Canada in September. Duke was left so disheartened after the abuse he received he stopped playing halfway through his set. Also in September, Kerri Chandler was a victim of theft when his valued records got stolen at Phonox in London.
A month later Jeff Mills had a bottle thrown at him at Club 42 in Spain and this wasn’t the first time he was subjected to this sort of behaviour. In the Atlantico in Rome back in 2013, he also had a glass pelted at him. But who on earth would want to hurt Jeff Mills? This soft spoken, intergalactic gentleman has never done anything to deserve such horrendous acts. The most recent case was in Belfast last Friday, where Ansome was meant to be playing a B2B live set with Defekt but ran into some technical difficulties. A member of the crowd decided to lob a drink onto Ansome’s set up causing the equipment to stop working. Ansome had to quit playing and immediately dissemble his set up to try and repair his costly equipment from the initial damage that had been caused. Some of the equipment can cost thousands or are irreplaceable.
This stuff should probably go without saying, but it seems like this an issue that needs to be highlighted. If you find yourself in the audience and there is something wrong with the music, either it stops or there is some issue with the sound, please refrain yourself from throwing an object at the DJ. Not only can you cause physical harm to the person or the equipment but you can emotionally hurt that person too. Most of these DJs/artists have grueling work schedules and are probably exhausted so cut them some slack.
In a majority of cases, when technical issues do occur it is usually outside of the DJs control and even if they fucked up, they are only human...we all make mistakes. Even in the worst case scenario and the DJ has gone into a K-hole on stage you still should never fucking throw something, You don’t kick a man when they are down and if you do, what does that say about you?
Were you the kind of person that bullied people in school? Are you feeling miserable in your own life that you have to inflict suffering onto other people? Or are you just jealous? If you’re doing it in front of the lads to make yourself look cool, well guess what? You are far from it. If you find yourself robbing, throwing things or spitting on DJs or other people, there is something wrong with you. You don’t have the right to touch another person or their belongings. So please remember this next time you are out and relinquish yourself of doing such acts.
Respect the artist, respect the music and most importantly respect yourself.
