Berlin Clubs Wilde Renate, Else and ://about latest clubs to face demolition

A100 Protest-Rave

Wilde Renate, Else and ://about blank could face demolition if plans to extend Berlin's A100 autobahn are carried out in their current form. It is just the latest in a slew of nightclub closures, with many more whose future hangs in the balance. It was revealed just this week that the future of Paris club Concrete is in jeopardy after it was served with a 15-day eviction notice on February 11th.

Planning for the A100 autobahn began in 1992 with the aim of reducing traffic congestion in the German capital, and its final phase of construction will see it extended through the neighbourhoods of Neukölln, Treptow, Friedrichschain and Lichtenberg. All three clubs are within five minutes walk from each other in the Friedrichshain area.

Apartments and businesses are also subject to demolition, meaning that residents will be forced to relocate and jobs will be at risk.

In response to the federal government’s plans, objectors to the autobahn are staging an A100 Protest-Rave that will take place on Saturday 25th May on the Elsenbrücke. From 2 – 6pm on Saturday there will be music and speeches every hour, with representatives of the endangered clubs expected to speak. Bloody Mary and Sebastian Voigt amongst others will be playing as part of the protest.

The protest will advocate for reliance on modes of transport other than cars, such as bicycles, scooters and car-sharing. Most Berlin residents do not own a car. The potential knockoff effect for tourism will also be highlighted, given that Wilde Renate, Else and ://about blank have been key clubs on the Berlin circuit for a number of years. A recent study by the Berlin Club Commission found that club tourism is worth an estimated €1.5 billion to the city each year.

You can find out about the A100 Protest Rave happening this Saturday 2 – 4pm here. For more information about the campaign visit Changing Cities and A100 Stoppen
