MDD ‘React and Explode’ (S.L.A.M) Review

On October 19th, duo MDD made their S.L.A.M (South London Analogue Material) debut, with a killer 12” Vinyl release – React and Explode. The E.P is compiled of 4 tracks, each one as heavy and goose-bump inducing as the next, with rave sounds emanating from the beginning - perfect for big underground sound systems! React and Explode creates an intense atmosphere, leaving no time for detaining, and keeps the listener at its fingertips from the moment the first track pumps through the speakers. An exciting and impressive follow on from their first release.

MDD - ‘Buried’

From the very second you play the first track - ‘Buried’, you’re immediately introduced to a thumping kick drum and various rattling echo rave-like stabbing sounds, setting the tone for the E.P. Although the track is not quite as fast paced as the other tracks, it’s still as heavy, and contains an array of crunchy elements surrounded by random waves of eerie vocals. The echoed hi-hats and components create an anticipating build up, which then plunges into a steady fast paced beat. The track uses a lot of noise, texture and space, which makes it extremely heavy hitting.

MDD - Perspective

Perspective is hypnotising and blood pumping. It starts with a hard kick drum and various clicks panned from left to right. Deep metallic industrial clanking sounds are then added, introducing a high pitched and extremely distorted shrieking vocal, which pulls you right in. The vocal moves its way through the track, and high pitched stabs are gradually brought in, gathering intensity as it moves along. The deep and dirty kick drum develops into a steady pace, filled with exciting dark and menacing elements. This track is sure to destroy any clubs dancefloor.

MDD Featuring Alisson Chanic – Opal Fall

This weapon starts with a steady paced echoed kick drum rolling along a distorted atmosphere. Female vocals are introduced, intensifying the track. The distortion is mainly heavily focused on the drums and random noisy components. The track then transitions into a rather long anticipating break down. Humming and crashing sounds are added warping around double kick drums. Eventually ‘Opal Fall’ jumps straight back into thumping kick rolls with various elements, the vocal taking the main focus of the track.

MDD Featuring Allison Chanic – Opal Fall Manni Dee Remix

‘Opal Fall’ is then remixed by techno heavyweight Manni Dee. The track starts off with distorted voices, creeks, and high pitched noises, and then in true Manni Dee fashion, grabs you and pulls you right into an exhilarating, fast and pounding techno banger. The sharp hi-hat keeps the track at a perfect pace, with crunches, sirens, vibrations and drones adding to the dark energetic atmosphere. Unlike the original version of Opal Fall, the vocal isn’t the main element, instead the main focus is on the aggressive groove with little bursts of the vocal scattered through the track. After the breakdown the track bursts in to a stream of acid rave stabs, and tight hi-hat rolls wrapped around the hard kick drum still holding its menacing steady fast beat. The track remains strong, ending with distorted, freaky sounding voices with noisy pitched drones, A truly exciting end to a great release!
