Hailing from Rotterdam, Charlton ambitions date back from the age of 17 attending raves all over Holland and his obsession for this music led him to start djing himself. Not long after he started producing and creating his own unique sound. After his studies he moved to London to develop his sound.

Now the Berlin based artist has been making waves all around the world. We have a quick chat to him about his label, influences and his projects. Also included is a podcast by Charlton.

Q1. Could you provide us with an insight to how you got involved with techno?

The local coffee shop where dj’s use to play a few records on a friday night !!! Think it was dj Milton And djs I was definitely underaged 16 years old and after that my friends took me out to teknival festival somewhere around Rotterdam it was pretty mad and I started to some of the records in Rotterdam where i met Benny Rodrigues he was working at basic beats at the time and also use to visit triple vision and clone records.

Q2. The Netherlands is renowned for harder styles and coming from Rotterdam has that influenced your own style?

Not really because I’m more from a hip hop background but of my friends where in to gaber music and tekno with a k, where I started to buy normal techno records like steve stoll, surgeon, oliver ho 65 d mavericks regis etc etc etc always was a fan of their uk sound and some americans of course and speedy j earlier and steve rachmad off course !!

Q3. The label ‘Poverty Is Violence’ that you run with Nick Dunton has a very thought provoking name. What is the underlying interpretation of this moniker?

Its too deep a subject to get into here, with many nuances, but it could be said that Extreme poverty could be seen as a man made problem. How we go about fixing this is another conversation.

Q4. Who is the latest release on the label and how did you come across this artist?

XXX he send us a really good demo he already done a ep it will be out on the 17th of september if correct he is a mystery man from Amsterdam and does not want to be revealed.

Q5. Do you think social media has improved or hindered the techno scene?

Well I guess it's ok to use social media but I really think its the music that counts if you're black or white male or female don’t forget its about music keep it real !!!

Well I just got back from Colombia people go really bonkers over there one of my favourite countries it was my first time out there and the people are proper having it good crowd nice vibes.
